26/08/06 Rochdalians – Away

Both ELPM teams had strong incentives to win at the weekend as the 1st XI looked to maintain their win streak for the last 6 competition and the second XI are aiming to beat the threat of relegation.

The second team travelled to top of the table Rochdalians and despite the home teams openers starting well Shiels (5-38) ripped through the top order and aided by the wily Openshaw the Millers were able to restrict Rochdalians to 116 despite being 89-4.  McCheyne (42) anchored the Millers chase with another good contribution from Matt Partington (28).  The Millers got to the target for the loss of six wickets and now have a realistic chance of avoiding relegation with good results in the remaining two games.

12/08/06 Elton Vale – Away

The second XI enjoyed the luxury of an early finish in a low scoring game.  The home team were unable to cope with any of the Millers bowlers as Wade (5-24) decimated the top order and claimed a superb hat-trick.  As Elton Vale had collapsed to 5-7, Keyworth (4-5) then finished the job with only Khan (24) reaching double figures.  The posted total of 42 was easily knocked off without the loss of a wicket and the seconds hope of avoiding relegation has now turned into a reality.

05/08/06 Fothergill and Harvey – Away

Both ELPM teams faced tough games last weekend against Fothergill and Harvey who were high flyers in their respective leagues.

The second team also chose to field first but steady contributions all the way down the side especially Williamson (58) saw the visitors to 239-7 in their 45 overs.  Recently appointed skipper Berry took 5-61 and Keyworth 2-67 claimed the others.  The Millers run chase was encouraged by a partnership of 46 between Matt Partington (34) and Steve Moore (31) but the Millers middle and lower order were unable to offer any runs as they collapsed for 119.

29.07.06 Robinsons II – Home

After back to back wins for the first time in the season the Millers first team were looking to do the league double against Robinsons.  The second team at the foot of the third division faced Robinsons seconds at home.

Fortunately, the second XI were able to bat much capably as they chased Robinsons total of 177 earning four valuable points.  The ELPM innings was batted through by McCheyne who knocked a glorious 80 with classic shots both sides of the wicket.  The partnership between Lomax (25) which was worth 75 was the catalyst for the victory although ELPM were also assisted by a sloppy fielding performance by the visitors who conceded 38 extras.

22.07.06 Tottington St Johns II – Home

The second XI were again playing without a full team and despite four batsmen getting into the twenties, none were able to push on as they set Totts 125.  Tottington had opening batter Jones removed by the Partington father-son partnership but Ainscoe (64*) and Payton (39*) reached 127 for the loss of only one wicket as the second team stay rooted to the foot of the table.

15.07.06 Broadway – Away

The second team were visiting Broadway, hoping to build on the disappointment of the last game being abandoned after they scored a season best 231-7.

The second XI travelled to Broadway needing a victory to try to move off the foot of the table despite playing again without eleven players.  The Millers batted first and opener Phil Partington was the only player to get to grips with the Broadway bowling as he batted the majority of the innings for 76 before being caught and bowled by Ayub who took 5-32.  G Moore (19) was the only other player to reach double figures as the total set for Broadway was 134.  This total proved too easy for the home side as they reached 135 for the loss of only two wickets.

24.06.06 Chew Moor Brook – Home

The second team, also going through a bad patch were at home to Chew Moor Brook and despite being called into the team that morning, McCheyne opened the batting and amassed a magnificent 110*, batting through the innings ably assisted by S Moore.  The Millers reached 184-4 in their allotted overs but CMB batted steadily and reached the target with the loss of 6 wickets in 39 overs.

10.06.06 Rochdalians – Home

After three successive losses, all at home, the Millers first team travelled to Rochdalians.  The second team, also struggling for form, played the Rochdalians second team at home.

ELPM second team were also short of runs batting first with only P. Partington (25) and G. Moore (44) making meaningful contributions as Heighway (4-30) claimed the top four batsmen.  The Millers reached 145 all out and Rochdalians reached this easily for the loss of only one wicket with Ali (75*) and Kahn (34*) giving the visitors all five points.

10.05.06 Failsworth Macedonia II – Away                               11.05.06 Greenfield III – Away

The mill men suffered more losses at the weekend as both teams were unable to add any points to their current totals.  The second XI had another double weekend including a return to Greenfield after previously encounters in the Saddleworth league.

The second XI also lost the toss and fielded first but despite having only 9 men they were able to keep the Failsworth total to 165.  Smith (4-51) and Gerald Moore (4-45) both bowled tightly as only Maddocks (56) made any significant contribution.  The Millers were looking good with the father and son opening partnership reaching 65 before Matt Partington (38) was bowled and S.Moore (0) followed next ball.  Despite Phil Partington reaching 68, few other batsmen could hang around and they fell sixteen runs short of the target and clearly disappointed that a full team could not be managed.

On Sunday, Greenfield reached 243 all out with steady contributions right down the order, Matt Partington (6-56) claiming almost all the Greenfield top order batsmen. This total however, proved too much to chase as only Keyworth (31) made double figures until the last partnership of Berry (26*) and Openshaw (24) put on 43.  ELPM only managed 132-10.

03.05.06 Fothergill & Harvey II – Away                               04.05.06 Fothergill & Harvey II  (cup) – Away

The second team visited Fothergill & Harvey on Saturday and Sunday.  The home team set a good total with opener Ghadi getting a century (101).  Openshaw (2-59) removed two of the top order but the pick of the bowlers was Smith who claimed 4-33.  Although the Millers batted out their overs out with Matt Partington (37) and Steve Moore (29) both recording season best scores the Millers never caught up with the run rate and reached 151-8, 41 runs short of a point.

Matt Partington was again in the runs on Sunday as he stormed to 46 before being adjudged LBW.  Moore (20) and Woodward (18) also chipped in but the rest offered little resistance to the Fothergill’s bowlers.  Fothergill’s opening batsmen knocked off the runs in 15 overs leaving the Millers bowlers wicket less.

27.05.06 Elton Vale II – Home

There were mixed fortunes for the Millers at the weekend.  On Saturday, the first team had their game at Elton Vale abandoned on arrival but the second team earned their first win of the season.  Sunday saw Robinson’s first team visit Croft Lane for the second time in a week, with a place in the cup semi-final at stake.

The second team, playing Elton Vale seconds, fielded first and got off to a great start with Lomax taking a wicket in the first over.  Lomax (3-13) then tore through the top order aided by a superb diving slip catch by Gerald Moore.  Abdul (38) was cutting loose and looking threatening until he was bowled by youngster Matt Partington (2-26) who also bowled Duffel (14).  Woodward (2-13) and Openshaw (2-11) both claimed a couple of wickets as Elton Vale reached 120.  The ELPM innings got off to a solid start with Woodward and Phil Partington (26) batting well. Once Partington was caught, Woodward anchored the rest of the innings as wickets continued to fall.  Woodward (58*) produced some fine strokes with 10 fours and saw his side to within 2 runs of victory until he had to retire hurt.  The Millers reached 121 for the loss of only 3 wickets giving them a well deserved win.

29.04.06 Broadway – Home

The second XI began their season against a strong Broadway first team and after the Millers elected to bat, posting a total less than one hundred always going to be difficult to defend.  In the Millers top order, Lomax (16), M.Partington (16) and Woodward (18) all batted patiently and got starts, but failed to push on to a big innings.  As the lower order started to collapse the club president Moore (10*) anchored the rest of the innings and guided the Millers to 91 all out.  Broadway’s opening batsman Riley (57*) timed the ball well and consistently hit all bowlers to the boundary allowing the visitors to cruise to 93 for only one wicket.
