26/08/06 Rochdalians – Home

Both ELPM teams had strong incentives to win at the weekend as the 1st XI looked to maintain their win streak for the last 6 competition and the second XI are aiming to beat the threat of relegation.

ELPM, choosing to field first, had an early breakthrough as Greaves had opener Ahmed caught behind.  The next partnership added 39 before Dalton trapped Mian (32) LBW.  Dalton (4-69) took the wickets of four of the top six batsmen as ELPM looked in a strong position at 112-6 but not for the first time, they struggled to remove the lower order.  Iqbal (27), Hayee (46) and Iqbal (29) added valuable runs to bolster the visitors position as they posted 228.

The ELPM run chase was also a casualty of early wickets with Greaves and Lomax both going for 5 runs.  Next batsman Warne (12) was only one of three players to reach double figures but only Robinson (55) – opening for the first time, was able to make any real impact.  The Millers skipper continued his good form with the bat making consecutive half centuries before edging a cut shot to point.  At 100-4, victory looked unlikely but a draw was still possible because of a late start.  This meant that the Millers had to bat out three overs with one wicket remaining for two points.  Unfortunately Ahmed sent Birtwistles off stump flying and the visitors took all five points.

12/08/06 Elton Vale – Home

In the first team fixture at ELPM, Elton Vale chose to bat first and with steady partnerships in the top order thanks to half centuries from Atafaf (52) and Ali (50) they were in a strong position at 148-4.  Due to various reasons, the Millers had only two recognised bowlers which meant paceman Dalton (5-94) and spinner Young (3-112) had to bowl long spells.  With a few quick wickets in the middle order, keeping the visitors to under 200 was a priority but an unbeaten tenth wicket partnership of 62 took Elton Vale to a formidable 259-9 in there 45 allotted overs.

The Millers run chase set off at the correct pace with just less than a run a ball required from the start.  Daly’s consistent boundaries were key as Lomax and Hocking assisted without scoring heavily.  Skipper
